Silver Nemesis

Season 25, Story 3/4, Serial 7K, 3 x 25min episodes, 23rd November to 7th December 1988, Writer: Kevin Clarke, Director: Chris Clough, Script Editor: Andrew Cartmel, Producer: John Nathan-Turner.

Mark Walker@Mark_Walker Among the 1st stories I ever saw - was the year I started watching. Makes me feel young again! (ish)

50dw50@50dw50that one tweet made me feel ancient, i remember Death to the Daleks!

I used to quite like this version of the theme, now I can't stand it.

The "South America" scenes pass off quite well. They did well with the weather!

Isaac Dakin@IWhittakerDakin Makes a nice change from a quarry in Wales

Poor polly.

50dw50@50dw50 they were rather lucky, hope @TardisParrot is not watching the opening scenes!

Awful music; par for the course with Keff :-(

Wierd switch from South America to Windsor in the past.

Whilst sinister Lady Peinforte plans sorcery in Elizabethan England...

...Herr De Flores and the boys from Brazil plan the 4th Reich.

23rd November 1988, the 25th Anniversary. What a coincidence! Lady Peinforte's house is a great location, and look - a chess set...

Outdoor scenes on video. Yuck.

The Doctor's alarm goes off in the middle of a Courtney Pine gig. Rude.

The Doctor doesn't understand asking for autographs.

You'll get used to it, mate.

Cassettes; those were the days!

Mark Walker@Mark_Walker when making a good mix tape required some skill!

Ah, Pathetic Tin Skulkers of the Galaxy's "Excellent Mix volume 1"!

50dw50@50dw50 i still have loads of them with stuff i recorded off the radio that i can never replace.

Who exactly are those clowns with the cyber-headphones?

Mark Walker@Mark_Walker Those hit men are crap shots - are they ex-UNIT?

Leslie French was almost the 1st Doctor.

James Cooray Smith@thejimsmith And is the model for the statue of Ariel outside Broadcasting House.

Seems the Doctor's alarm was to warn him Earth is in danger. Bloody thing should be just constantly ringing really!

"When I employed you, you led me to believe you were a hardened criminal!"

The lines between Peinforte and Richard are the best bits in this.

The Doctor admits his timekeeping isn't the best.

As the Nemesis comet approaches Earth...

...the Doctor and Ace go in search of the bow of Nemesis, beneath Windsor castle.

Fez!

Peinforte's already nicked the arrow though, and it starts to glow as the statue returns...

The comet strikes the Earth...

...and the Doctor & Ace feel the shockwaves beneath Windsor castle.

50dw50@50dw50 ignoring the fact that a comet strike that big should have flattened Windsor and created a dust storm!

Vicki Davidson@VickiDavidson1 Turns out it wasn't filmed at Windsor Castle, but at Arundel Castle, instead!

Power cuts? What UNIT date is this?

Peinforte and Richard seem unable to work out complicated 20th century machinery such as doors and windows, which they obviously never had back home.

The Doctor takes Ace back to Lady Peinforte's house, where this all began.

The Doctor covers up the grisly sight of the murdered mathematician in case any Doctor Who fans complain to Points of View.

The Doctor explains that Peinforte discovered the living metal and fashioned it into a statue of herself. Ego.

The police car's battery has been knackered by... something. Gas dispensers rise from the soil & choke the police.

Not a patch on Cybermats.

Never understood the point of this jobs for the boys crowd of cameos, you can't really see anyone anyway. "Don't blink!" or you'll miss them...

Mark Walker@Mark_Walker Love how no one notices a police box materialising in the corner

Wandering around the castle, the Doctor tries to blag it but Ace pulls him to one side.

Wouldn't want to bump into that Liz 2 impersonator, after all.

"The noise, lady, the foul air!"
"Sorry about that."

The Doctor tries to persuade the royal security bods to let him pass by telling them he travels in time and space. Oh for some psychic paper.

De Flores & the Boys from Brazil turn up with the glowing bow of Nemesis.

De Flores threatens Ace's life when the Doctor doesn't have the arrow.

Just as it seems Ace is about to be shot, a space ship arrives out of nowhere...

"Don't thank them yet, you might live to regret it."

Shiny new Cybermen! Shiny shiny!

The new look shiny Cybermen are actually great.

The new cyber-guns are rubbish though. They can't even be held without great difficulty.

50dw50@50dw50 recycled giggle guns

The design of the 75's has vaguely grown on me over time (apart from the flares!) but they're acted so badly, though even Banks' Cyberleaders seem to have that pompous/sarcastic "personality" compared to their underlings. Grew up with the 80s ones, but love all the 60s versions that bit more now.

Mark Walker@Mark_Walker The 7th Doctor just loved diving into ditches!

Peinforte seems to hint it was Troughton she met, which is a bit odd really. Would have thought it should be Hartnell.

Ugh, this Keff-tastic music... it's dated so badly, hasn't it. Much worse than the 70s and early 80s stuff.

"A Cyberman killed by an arrow? That's ludicrous!" Yes, yes it is.

Mark Walker@Mark_Walker I'd forgotten about the arrow hitting the TARDIS!

Karl unknowingly goes to a lot of effort to rescue an empty case from the Cybermen.

Richard is horrified by what England has become in the 1980s. Weren't we all, mate, weren't we all.

Mark Walker@Mark_Walker He should be glad he wasn't transported to now then!

The Cybermen start to cut the statue free, De Flores bides his time.

The Doctor and Ace use the bow to track the statue.

"You looking at me?" Unusually convincing thugs for Who.

"Will you be turned into rats?"
"We already have been."

Richard turns badass. "Money, say you?"

The Doctor jams the Cyber transmissions with Ace's bootleg of Courtney Pine's gig. She's a pirate! Arghhh!

The Cybermen make their base in Peinforte's own tomb.

The Doctor and Ace are picking up some Cyber interference.

The Cybermen tune into Smooth FM. "It is meaningless!"

Mark Walker@Mark_Walker The Doctor and Ace torment the Cybermen with some Jazz. Surprised they didn't give up there and then!

"It sounds like a bear, only worse!" Richard's not a Jazz fan either.

Mark Walker@Mark_Walker 'who did this to you?' 'SOCIAL WORKERS'! Great moment!

Peinforte's made it to the statue, but the Cybermen have hidden it and scarpered.

"Now our plan begins to operate."
"Er, leader, what exactly *is* the plan?"
"Er... well... shut up, that's why."

"Is this the human condition of Madness, leader?"
"No, this is one of Suggs's solo singles."

Richard keeps them at bay with gold tipped arrows.

Hiding in the bushes, Ace sneezes, so the Doctor fakes some birdsong with his umbrella. Don't ask.

The Doctor distracts the headphone guards...

...dispatches Ace to blow up the Cybership.

"DESTROY THEM! DESTROY THEM! DESTROY THE HELL OUT OF THEM!" Ace blows up the Cybership, so the Cybermen shoot their useless headphoned henchmen.

De Flores forges an alliance with the Cybermen by quoting Wagbo.

The Doctor points out the disasters caused every 25 years by the Nemesis. Maybe just stop it the first time?

Attacked by the Nazis, Richard shoves the arrow in the statue and it starts to awaken.

De Flores thinks he has the set but just as he tries to boss the Cybermen they point out the bow's been half inched.

"They're shrouded!"

That lizard takes that little part and acts the hell out of it. Kudos, fella.

Those Cyber Warships look unlike any other Cyber-ships before or after. Thank god. They're rubbish.

Isaac Dakin@IWhittakerDakin If there were thousands of cyber ships in orbit why didn't they try and intercept it in space?

They were using it to draw Peinforte out so they could get the arrow off her, to be fair.

It was great to see the Invasion-style ships used in A Good Man Goes to War.

The Doctor turns up to waffle chess guff at the Cybermen.

All this chess stuff will come back to bite him, mark my words.

The statue awakens and they scarper in the TARDIS, leading it away.

Mark Walker@Mark_Walker The Nemesis statue actually seemed slightly creepy at the time

The Cyberleader orders De Flores and Karl killed but they throw a speck of gold dust at him and escape.

The Doctor prepares for the arrival of the statue by setting up a rocket sled in an abandoned hangar. Obviously.

This is where the story goes completely off the rails. Dolores Gray. Just what the hell was JNT thinking?

Goes without saying that the fact Keff McCulloch's crimes against music still go unpunished is an outrage

The Cybermen arrive and the Cyberleader is bizarrely fixated in killing Ace. Priorities, mate.

PEINFORTE: "We ride to destiny."
REMINGTON: "We surely do, honey, we surely do!"
RICHARD: "Stop the car, I'm getting out."

And now the Cybermen explode at the merest whiff of a gold coin from a catapult :-(

On a high gantry...

Ace is trapped in a Cyber Mexican standoff...

...but comes out of it alright by ducking.

The Doctor gets ratty when the statue keeps asking "are we there yet?"

The Doctor uses the rocket sled's burners to take out some Cybermen, but De Flores & Karl arrive with the bow.

"Oh no, not you again." Know the feeling.

De Flores has made the same mistake as Ace, though...

...assuming the Cyberleader is dead.

He isn't.

"She is mad!"
"Speak not of my lady so!"
"She is, though, look at her. Mad as a box of frogs!"

"Have you never wondered...?" No. Don't give me any of that looms guff.

A mad time travelling villain who knows the secrets of a dark and Scottish Doctor with Cybermen involved? Nope, not ringing any bells.

James Cooray Smith@thejimsmith Is it possible that the secret Lady P knows is The War Doctor?

Ooh, I like that! Though it seems it's a secret the 7th Doctor knows too & it doesn't *feel* like Docs 1-8 know about him.

Ace tells the Doctor to let the Cybermen kill her rather than let them win, but he wants to give it to them.

Peinforte merges with the statue.

The Nemesis launches... right into the cyberfleet.

"I gave your instructions to the statue, and it understood them... and ignored them."

Richard saves the day by killing the Cyberleader with a gold tipped arrow.

"Just like you nailed the Daleks."

Anyone else think Richard was going to start playing the end credit music from Blackadder II then?

ACE: Professor? Doctor? Who are you?

DOCTOR: Mind your own beeswax.

Kosmic Kris@KosmicKris hugely enjoyed reading along! Silver Nemesis is an absolute hoot! Do we think Anton Differing knew he was in it?

James Cooray Smith@thejimsmith Poor Anton; gay Jewish actor who fled fascism. Spent his working life playing Nazis.

TonyCross@Lokster71 Didn't he just take the part so he could watch Wimbledon. Or is that a myth?

James Cooray Smith@thejimsmith Sophie Aldred said it. She has no reason to make it up! :)

HexEd@HexEd1967I loved Silver Nemesis! Quite stylish and smart.

Kosmic Kris@KosmicKris imagine the sheer joy of pitching this story "...Cybermen, Courtney Pine, Anton Differing.."

50dw50@50dw50 "boxer shorts, social workers, queen impersonators..."
